BOURNEMOUTH’S Big Wheel is under construction at Pier Approach – but it won’t be ready to ride this bank holiday weekend.

The attraction, which gives visitors a view of the town and coastline from more than 100ft in the air, is making a comeback after making its first appearance between March and September last year.

It was taken down before the second phase of work at Pier Approach started in October.

While the wheel is built with the assistance of a crane, contractors are continuing with the completion of the Pier Approach refurbishment work.

The surfacing work, which started mid-April, is not expected to finish for at least another week.

Once complete, visitors to the area will be able to see the finished result of the regeneration project, which started in the winter of 2014/15 with an initial phase of work on the western side of Pier Approach.

Among the improvements delivered by the project are “high quality granite paving”, new street furniture and planting, and semi-submerged bins with greater capacities for rubbish.

The council said there would also be improvements made to the rubbish and recycling facilities along the seafront ahead of the summer season.

Council leader John Beesley has previously described the work as a “high-quality transformation” and “a fitting gateway to Bournemouth’s spectacular seafront”. Beachgoers are expected to head in their droves to the seafront this weekend as temperatures are set to soar as high as 21C on Sunday and Monday.

Long spells of sunshine are forecast across the three days, with Sunday due to be hotter than Ibiza, which is forecast for highs of 19C and scattered showers.

As previously reported, Bournemouth council has attempted to relieve travel disruption over the busy bank holiday weekend by removing roadworks in the town centre.

Utility company SGN will not resume its work on Bath Road until Tuesday, while Bournemouth council’s own works on Bourne Avenue, Avenue Road and Braidley Road will also be put on hold until after the weekend.
