Tuckton Bridge will remain open today after a failure in communication meant the weekend opening was not publicised.

The decision to open the bridge was taken by a council employee - but not passed to the authority's communication department.

Motorists were able to travel across the bridge from Saturday afternoon following a decision made by the lead engineer to reopen it.

However, on Sunday morning, the council's official Twitter account tweeted to say the bridge was closed.

Diversion notices and road closed signs were also left out, causing some confusion for motorists.

It is understood the information was not passed to the council's communication team to publicise, nor were signs saying the bridge was closed removed or taken down.

Larry Austin, Director of Environment said: "Following the completion of the road surface preparatory works early Saturday afternoon, a decision was made by the lead engineer to re-open the bridge temporarily over the weekend.

"The bridge will remain open today but will close again from tomorrow (Tues 10 April) at 9am when resurfacing and line work will begin.

"We are pleased to confirm that we are on schedule to complete the works by 15 April. We would like to thank motorists and residents for their patience while these works have been ongoing."

The lead engineer is a Bournemouth council employee.
