THERE was a significant increase in the number of stolen dogs last year, despite the introduction of mandatory microchipping across the UK in 2016.

Dogs Lost, the UK's largest online service for stolen and missing pets, received reports of 217 stolen dogs last year, with another 32 registered as stolen in the first month of 2018. This is compared to 2016 when only 61 dogs were reported stolen.

Alan Irvine, chairman of Homesitters, said the rising number of dog thefts could be reduced if owners employed a homesitter.

“Having a pet stolen is hugely distressing, especially if it was taken from your home. It can make people feel really worried about how to protect their pets, especially when they have to go out. Unfortunately, there are rising numbers of dogs and cats being stolen, especially designer breeds that are valuable and easily sold on," he said.

There are many actions people can take to protect their home and pets, he said, such as installing security systems and keeping doors and windows locked.

“When walking a dog it is also sensible to take precautions such as varying the route and the time of the walk, as well as knowing where the dog is at all times, even when off the lead," he said.

More people are also turning to homesitters to keep their home and pets safe when they go away.

A homesitter is a responsible and professional person who will stay in your home and look after any pets. Those working through Homesitters are only allowed to leave the home for a maximum of three hours during daylight hours, at any one time, and one hour at night.

Alan said: “Employing a homesitter can be a good solution for those worried about opportunistic thieves when they go on holiday. For pet owners this service means pets can stay in their home environment and be looked after by a caring animal lover who will stick to their usual feeding, grooming and exercise routine.”

“Our homesitters are fully briefed on safety and security. They are dedicated to keeping homes and pets safe and secure. They are employed by us and have our full back up 24/7 whilst on assignment, so people can go away with complete peace of mind and not have to spend time worrying whilst on holiday."
