FAIRTRADE zone status across Purbeck will continue to be supported by the local authority.

Purbeck District Council (PDC) has reaffirmed its support for the Fairtrade zone, having first been established in 2002.

PDC has supported the initiative across the district since 2005.

The council's Fairtrade champion, Cllr Beryl Ezzard, said: "I am delighted the council will continue its support to Fairtrade.

"The availability of Fairtrade products gives quality and choice for local people, encouraging them to shop locally, often for specialist items.

"This is not only good for local businesses but also for those communities in the countries where the products are manufactured."

As well as promoting the Fairtrade mark whenever possible, the council serves Fairtrade tea and coffee at its meetings and helps the Purbeck Fairtrade Network produce a directory of local outlets selling Fairtrade products.

The Fairtrade Foundation ensures workers involved in the production of Fairtrade products worldwide earn a decent wage, have a safe working environment and have access to health and education.
