DISTRACTED drivers have been snapped talking on their phones and texting, with one truck driver also caught rolling a cigarette at the wheel.

The Daily Echo has been campaigning against drivers using mobile phones and being distracted at the wheel for nearly 11 years.

The latest shocking images include the driver of a car transporter caught rolling a cigarette on the steering wheel of the large HGV.

Other drivers were caught with their phones in their hand, with some talking on their devices. All the pictures were taken while the vehicles were moving along the Wessex Way.

The car transporter driver was travelling in a South Western Vehicle Auctions vehicle.

A spokesperson for the company, which is based in Parkstone, said: "We take driver issues very seriously and have very strict policies in place when dealing with such matters.

"Thank you for bringing this event to our attention and the driver concerned will be dealt with accordingly.

"We have also taken the opportunity to re-emphasize the diligent standards of driving that we expect from all our drivers."

Last month, Dorset Police took part in a national enforcement campaign cracking down on people using their phones at the wheel.

Legislation introduced in March 2017 means those caught can receive six points on their licence and a £200 fine.

Motorists caught on their phones are no longer given the opportunity to attend an awareness course instead of receiving points.

In 2016, 32 people were killed in road traffic collisions where the driver of the vehicle was using their mobile phone, according to reports from the Department for Transport.

The Dorset Police No Excuse team tackles bad and inconsiderate driving, using a range of enforcement action against drivers.

The team were set-up to tackle the 'fatal five'; drink and drug driving, excessive and inappropriate speed, not wearing a seatbelt, driver distractions and careless driving.

They operate 24-hours a day, seven days a week across the county.
