A SCOUT group from Christchurch has received a timely financial boost to help support the work the organisation does in the community.

Colin Tabor, who is chairman of 20th Christchurch (Somerford) Scout Group, was presented with a cheque for £1,695 by Daily Echo editor Andy Martin on behalf of the Gannett Foundation.

The group, who are based at Mallory Close, are hoping to use the money to purchase a new party tent and tables for events, as well as fund a wide range of activities for all members of the troop, from Beavers through to Scouts.

Around 70 local children attend the various age groups and Mr Tabor said: "The money is going to be a massive boost for us.

"We have a load of great leaders and a good committee so it is going well.

"The group is in the heart of a hard up area of Christchurch and it provides good opportunities for young people.

"You can tell the people who were in the Scouts when they were younger. It gives invaluable life skills for everyone who attends."

Over the last 10 years alone, Newsquest, which publishes the Daily Echo, has given more than £3 million to help charitable community causes all over the country.

The Gannett Foundation UK, which makes the grants, retains a modest reserve to cater for urgent applications until the next round of awards. Applications can be made through any local Newsquest Media Group editor.
