CHICKEN owners are being urged to be extra vigilant following an outbreak of bird flu in Dorset.
Cases were confirmed at Abbotsbury Swannery earlier this month and now the RSPCA has asked people with "backyard flocks" to keep a close eye on their birds.
Mia Fernyhough, hen welfare expert at the RSPCA said: "Keeping hens has become more and more popular in recent years so it’s really important that owners keep a really close eye on their hens during this time and seek advice from their vet if they are at all concerned."
Areas of South Dorset have been declared an ‘Avian Influenza Protection Zone’ (APIZ) meaning those who keep poultry or other captive birds, including those kept as pets, are legally required to take additional measures to protect their birds and help to prevent the spread of bid flu.
Mia added: "Even for those who don’t fall within the AIPZ, it is still important to practice good biosecurity. The RSPCA, together with Defra, the NFU and other organisations, developed a simple guide to help backyard flock keepers to protect their birds from the threat of AI."
If you suspect any type of avian influenza you must report it immediately by calling the Defra Rural Services Helpline on 03000 200 301.
