BUMPER crowds are expected at the second Dan Ferris-Oates memorial rugby match on New Year's Eve.

The game, being hosted at Poole Rugby Club, Turlin Moor Recreation Ground, Hamworthy, is held in memory of the "inspirational" teacher, who died last November following a heart problem.

He was just 36 years old and left a wife and baby daughter.

Poole Rugby Club captain Robert James, one of the event organisers, told the Echo his side would be taking on the Mary's Kitchen Rovers team.

"They are a social side that gets together a couple of times a year to play at charitable events," said Robert. "They're a good team as well, they only won by two points last year and it was a great game. They have a strong squad but I think we have a good chance this time.

"Dan's widow Jemma and their daughter Bryher will be in attendance along with the mayor who will get things started off for us."

Dan had taught PE at Glenmoor and Winton Academies, and was an influential role model for his young students over the years.

Last year the match started with a minute of applause to Dan.

Mary's Kitchen Rovers players are former Poole High School students, who play for charity events after being taught by Dan when they were at school.

Money raised from the event will go to Cardiomyopathy UK, the heart muscle charity, which works to help those affected by the condition.

Last year more than £1,000 was raised for the charity, a total organisers hope to better on Sunday.

The match is open to all and kicks off at 1pm.

There will also be a large gazebo for spectators, hot food and drinks pitchside and a post match charity raffle.

A Cardiomyopathy UK spokesman said: "We provide support and information services, work to raise awareness of the condition, campaign for better access to quality treatment and promote research."
