RAIL passengers travelling through Southampton are being urged to check before they leave.

Due to overrunning engineering works, Network Rail are telling passengers to expect some cancellations, diversions or delays.

Engineers had worked throughout Sunday near Southampton as part of an £8million investment to renew railway infrastructure, but the work has taken longer than expected and the line will remain closed until work is completed, a spokesperson said.

"Train services will be affected as a result, with some trains cancelled and others diverted or delayed.

"Network Rail is therefore urging passengers going to or from Southampton and other surrounding routes to check before they travel on Monday 18 December."

They added: “We apologise sincerely for the inconvenience caused by overrunning engineering work in the Southampton area this morning and advise passengers to check before they travel.”
