MORE than £8,000 was raised at this year's Light Up the Prom event.

Hundreds of people gathered at Bournemouth Pier to remember their lost loved ones, last month (Nov 10), for what was one of the town's biggest memorial events.

This year, despite being postponed due to Storm Brian, it featured two minutes of silent reflection as hundreds of lights illuminated the prom, followed by a dazzling fireworks display.

Light Up the Prom organiser Karen Smith said: "We were thrilled once again by the support from the local people.

"We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated and shared this truly special evening with us."

The event was organised by Bournemouth Hospital Charity and Macmillan Caring Locally, with the funds raised split between the two organisations.

Nicola Lowe, managing partner of Harold G Walker Solicitors - corporate sponsor of the event - said: "This was a magical evening and an event which our firm has been extremely proud to support.

"Light Up the Prom allows friends and families to come together to remember a loved one. It is also an opportunity for people to express their heartfelt gratitude for all those who work tirelessly providing outstanding care and dignity to those suffering from illness."

Light Up the Prom raised more than £8,000 through donations and the sale of tea lights, which will be divided between the two charities.

The money will fund a number of projects that will provide comfort and support for patients and their loved ones. These include staff training, additional equipment and resources for those receiving palliative care.
