A CHARITY has expanded its operation in Christchurch - in a bid to continue vital support for elderly people in the town.

Christchurch Age Concern have opened a second shop in Bargates in the former Ukip offices, a stone's throw from their existing premises.

The new store will be selling clothes and accessories, which will allow the existing shop to concentrate on furniture and homeware.

The Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Nick Geary opened the new store at a special event on Monday.

Alistair Rumsey, the branch's general manager said they hope the expansion will increase their revenue and in turn, allow they to continue their services supporting people.

As well as advice for older people, the charity do one to one befriending, friendship group, transport and a lot more.

They also organise shopping trips and outings, and host five social groups a week.

"Christchurch has got the highest population of retired people in the country and because of that, there is quite a demand for our services.

"Grants are not available like they used to be and we have to work harder to keep our services available.

"We hope that this new shop will go some way towards doing this, and ask that people support us and in turn the local community."
