PLANS to demolish a former hairdressers and replace it with three residential properties could be turned down due to car access concerns.

The application, submitted by Purewell Mews Development, is seeking to build the three-bed dwellings with carports on the site of Hair and Beauty at number 32 Purewell, which closed at the start of the year.

The proposals have received eight responses from residents speaking out against the scheme.

A response from Dorset County highways team also recommends refusal of the plans.

In a letter to Christchurch Borough Council, the highway authority says: "The site proposal includes a parking arrangement that is served directly from Purewell where insufficient/no turning space is provided to enable vehicles to enter and exit the site in a forward gear.

"Reversing onto or off the carriageway at this location would be likely to interfere with the safety and free flow of traffic, all to the detriment of highway safety."

A planning statement submitted by the developers, says: "The proposed development will have a centrally sited vehicular access to forecourt to each carport, to allow for turning and vehicles to enter and leave the site in a forward gear. This reflects the existing front parking surfaces to nos. 18 to 28, and the front area parking at no.34."

The deadline has past for comments on the application and the application is being considered by a planning officer.
