A FAMILY from Poole celebrating a landmark birthday became caught up in the aftermath of the “horrifying” scenes in Las Vegas on Sunday night.

The death toll has risen to 59, with 527 injured from the atrocity on an open-air music festival.

Liam Donachy, 22, who works at JP Morgan, was visiting Las Vegas for two nights with his parents and brother, Mark.

The family are in the middle of a two-week trip around some of America to celebrate Mark’s 21st birthday.

The Broadstone family of four, who left Vegas yesterday around midday, were staying at the Bellagio hotel just one mile to the north of the mass-shooting.

While making their way back from a performance of Cirque du Soleil at Treasure Island hotel and casino, Liam said it was a frightening atmosphere to be involved in.

The group left the show around 10.30pm, which was at the opposite end of the Strip from where the horrific scenes took place.

On their walk back to their hotel Liam said a large number of people were running down the Strip towards them.

“We made it to near the fountains at the Bellagio and there were hundreds, probably thousands, going all ways, with shouts of “there’s been a shooting down there”,” Liam said.

After arriving at the Bellagio complex, Liam said people were running in all directions.

“It was a very scary situation and it’s something you never really expect to be caught up in,” Liam said.

“We got back to our hotel and put a message out on Facebook to tell people back home we were safe.

“I would like to think I’m a calm person, but my hands were shaking so much - I couldn’t even hold my phone.

“Since the shooting, it’s been a lot quieter everywhere.

“There are blood donation signs and ‘Pray for Las Vegas’ banners everywhere.

"On Monday there was a very strange atmosphere.

“There's hardly any people around and out on the streets.

“We went into downtown Las Vegas in the afternoon and it was so different to what it’s normally like.

“There are police officers everywhere and you can’t go down a street without seeing police cars.”
