A PAIR of gerbils have been rescued by the RSPCA after they were dumped under a pile of rubbish in Bournemouth.

The rodent pets, who have been named Spud and Jaffa, were found dumped alongside a cage in Cleveland Walk, off Holdenhurst Road, by a worker for a rubbish removal company on Sunday, September 17.

RSPCA inspector Graham Hammond, who is investigating, said: "Thankfully the contractor collecting the rubbish noticed a gerbil in the cage and then discovered another loose behind a bin bag, so they they were saved from being sent to landfill.

"Both the boys seem to be in a good condition and are now being cared for by the RSPCA animal rescue centre at Ashley Heath, where the have been placed into a lovely large temporary new home.

"It is so sad that someone deliberately put the poor gerbils lives at risk and threw them away like rubbish.

"It’s cruel and an unnecessary way to treat these defenceless animals.

"I’m hoping someone will recognise the gerbils or the cage they were left with and contact us."
