THESE two youngsters were thrilled to make a new friend while enjoying the shallows in Poole Harbour.

The friendly seal, pictured close to Poole Yacht Club, came up to the children’s rubber dinghy to say hello.

On Saturday the Daily Echo reported another seal sighting further along the coats at Boscombe Pier.

Sarah Hodgson, Dorset Wildlife Trust, said there are regular sightings of seals along the Dorset coast.

She added: “A number of seal sightings have been reported to us over the weekend. It is really exciting to encounter a seal. However, it is improtant to remember that these are wild animals and protected by law so their wellbeing must be yopu number one priority.”

Dorset Wildlife Trust says you must observe seals from a distance - at least 100 metres away - and try to keep calm and out of sight. Experts also want people to limit their viewing time to ten minutes, keep children and dogs away from the seal, and never touch of feed them.

Meanwhile, watercraft should maintain a slow, steady speed and stay at least 100 metres away.

Sarah said: "Seals can be inquisitive  - if they approach you it must be on their terms. Remain calm and do not touch them."
