PREPARATIONS are well underway for the 49th Great Dorset Steam Fair - an event expected to attract more than 200,000 visitors this year.

The annual extravaganza is billed as the world's largest heritage and cultural event to showcase Britain's industrial, agricultural and leisure industry.

Steam fair managing director Martin Oliver, son of event founder Michael Oliver, said: "We are all looking forward to another brilliant show.

"The new three and five day wristband options have been really popular and the number of advance bookings has been positive.

"There are lots of exciting exhibits and attractions this year with something for everyone to enjoy."

There will also be more than 100 acts performing on six stages over the five day event. Bands this year include The Wurzels, who will be debuting their new song 'Old Rosie' - inspired by the popular Westons cider and the Aveling & Porter steam roller it is named after.

Some of the UK's top tribute acts will also be playing the event.

Mr Oliver said: "I'm always surprised when I hear local people say they have never visited this world-class, breathtaking event that is right on their doorstep - especially when it plays such a huge part in the Dorset economy and in celebrating our history and heritage.

"I would like to invite as many local people as possible to come and see what we're all about. There is no other event like this anywhere in the world and you won't regret it."

Until next year the Great Dorset Steam Fair will also continue commemorating the centenary anniversary of the First World War.

The commemorations this year are set to include a display of a Western Front trench system, supported by original steam and historic vehicles from the 1914-18 conflict.

Living history soldiers and authentic World War One horse displays are also scheduled, and it is hoped the fair will include a static display of Royal Flying Corps aircraft.

Other attractions include The White Helmets stunt motorcycle team, the Big Pete Monster Truck display team and the Australian quad-bike stuntman Kangaroo Kid.

The Great Dorset Steam Fair takes place at Tarrant Hinton August 24-28.
