PLANS for a 24-hour gym in the centre of Christchurch "poses a significant risk" to the town according to residents who object to the development.

The proposal to open a fitness suite - by national chain Anytime Fitness - has been submitted to Christchurch Borough Council.

Several residents have voiced concerns over the development of the unit in Saxon Square, questioning the need for a 24-hour facility in the heart of the town.

The application seeks to change the premises' use from retail and restaurant to assembly and leisure.

The 586 square metre site, which is within the conservation area, is currently unoccupied.

Highways England, a conservation officer and environmental health had no objections to the proposal.

However, residents say the plans are out of character for the town.

"I have no objection to a gym that is open during the day and evening, but as I live in Christchurch town centre in close proximity to Saxon Square I know the local residents already suffer greatly, particularly at weekends, with the bars and nightclubs that are open till approximately 3am that spill out a number of noisy and drunken revellers throughout the night hours."

The resident goes on to say there is already the council gym facility at Two Riversmeet and the private Urban Fitness suite in High Street.

Another comment on the plans says: "I am very concerned about the change to a 24-hour use. This is not in keeping with local policy, or the requirement and need for Christchurch town centre. This poses a significant risk."

A letter written by the agent for the occupiers of neighbouring premises, 25 Saxon Square, says: "Have any conditions been put into place to ensure the correct insulation has been put into place to make sure the neighbouring retailers are not disturbed by the constant noise that is generated by this type of development."

One resident has commented in favour of the 24-hour gym. Their response says: "I feel that this would be an asset to the community, and a wonderful opportunity for the town."

The application is currently under consideration with a Christchurch Borough Council planning officer.
