LIKE a lot of people, Victor Aviat is looking forward to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's Proms in the Park next month.

But unlike everyone else, the 35-year-old Frenchman will be taking centre for the first night of the three day extravaganza in Meyrick Park.

Aviat is the BSO's Leverhulme Young Conductor in Association and will be in charge of proceedings for the 'A Night at the Oscars' - a celebration of the film scores of John Williams.

"I am very much looking forward to it," he told the Echo during a break in rehearsals at the Lighthouse.

"I know it is a much loved event and I have never done anything like this in my career. It's outdoors, there is a great rapport with the audience and it is all very exciting."

Aviat has been in post a year, taking over from Dutchman Frank Zielhorst who left last summer after also conducting the first Prom night.

Like his predecessor Zielhorst and compatriot Maxime Tortelier who also held the Young Conductor position, Aviat is charming and self effacing.

He was chosen from the 100 musicians who applied for the much coveted role and the audition shortlist of eleven.

Having trained in Germany and Switzerland, he was well aware of the BSO's reputation.

"It is a great orchestra and of course I knew a lot about the BSO before I applied. It is known across Europe and much further afield.

"When I came here I already knew some of the musician and it has helped me to build a great rapport. I have felt this since the very beginning."

Aviat praised the educational and community work of the BSO which he described as unique and extraordinary.

The Proms in the Park takes place from Friday August 11, Saturday 12 (Queen Spectacular) and Sunday (Sunday in the Park).
