MORE than 5,000 people are expected to pack out this year's British Beach Polo championships at Sandbanks.

The Daily Echo-backed event, celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, gets underway on Friday - with top players set to take centre stage.

Four teams will enter the two-day tournament, with a university match and Pony Club exhibition on both days.

This year also has a military theme, with a team from the British Army's Household Cavalry facing off against a side from the Honourable Artillery Company.

Sandpolo Ambassador and TV presenter Jodie Kidd said: "You simply cannot beat the polo at Sandbanks.

"It attracts some of the world's top polo players for some exceptional polo, a great party atmosphere and a fashionable crowd.

"I am super excited to find out what is in store for the tenth anniversary."

Event director Johnny Wheeler said: "Following nine successful years the beach polo has become an established annual regional event.

"Sandbanks is the perfect setting for us and combining this exhilarating sport with social and business interaction is a winning formula."

During the days high speed polo matches and beach volleyball will keep guests entertained, while in the evenings the marquees will form one big party area - with artists Tom Zanetti and the Artful Dodger set to perform.

"There will also be a breathtaking race between a Porsche 4x4 and the best playing pony, all topped off with the legendary beach parties," said an event spokesman.

This year's event is sponsored by Poole-based property specialists Link Homes.

Link Homes director Kay Williams said: "This is a great opportunity for us to team up with a fantastic and prestigious local event.

"We look forward to working closely with the organisers and hope to help bring new and exciting elements to the event."

This year's championships, taking place July 7 & 8, will be supporting the Household Cavalry Foundation, who will be present on both days.
