A CYCLIST was left bleeding and in need of hospital treatment after being attacked by a dog whose owners didn’t even offer an apology.

Stewart Borrett, 70, was cycling through Wareham Forest when a German shepherd chased and bit him in front of its owners.

He said the women told him he must have frightened the dog and left him bleeding without offering to take him to hospital.

Mr Borrett, from Wareham, was out cycling on Monday, June 26, at around 3pm when the incident happened.

“I went around a corner travelling at a reasonable speed and I saw these two women walking on the left hand side but I didn’t see the dog,” he said.

"I was quite a distance from them and this long-haired Alsatian came in from behind and attacked me on the side. It took one chunk out of the lower part of my leg and then really attacked me on the outside of the thigh.

“I got off my bike and used it as a defence between myself and the dog and fortunately it didn’t come at me again, but the women never called after the dog.

“They didn’t apologise in any way. The only thing they said was I must have frightened it and it was a rescue dog and they had only just got it,” he added.

“I was bleeding a lot. The only thing I said to them was I’m going to have to take myself to hospital. That’s what I did – I cycled out of the forest and then phoned the police, who gave me an incident number and told me to contact them when I had got back from hospital.”

He said police visited him within half an hour of him calling them again from home.

He was too shocked to describe the women in detail but said they were middle-aged women and one was wearing a black and white dress.

“I am a 70 year old male but next time it could be a child. This dog needs to be found,” he said.

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 101.
