TESCO has lodged an official planning application for a new store in the centre of Canford Cliffs village.

Four shops currently vacant on Haven Road will be renovated by the supermarket giant, which wants to locate one of its Express stores at the site.

Branksome Park, Canford Cliffs & District Residents Association chairman Robin Reid told the Echo: "Not everyone is keen on Tesco necessarily, but residents are very pleased that finally these four empty premises will come back to use.

"I have spoken to Tesco and they have said they try not to impact on smaller, specialist shops."

Some traders in Canford Cliffs have been concerned about declining footfall along Haven Road for some time.

One business owner, who asked not to be named, said: "I don't suppose everyone is happy about Tesco moving in, but this will be a good thing for many of the businesses in this area.

"These units have been empty for too long - it brings the whole area down."

Writing in support of the application, resident Nick Milligan, of Brudenell Road, said: "The large number of vacant shops in Canford Cliffs Village has resulted in further closures of cafes and restaurants and results in a neglected and depressed area, in what should be a smart and vibrant part of Poole.

"I support this development which will both improve the appearance of the village and increase footfall and shopping, and may result in further investment and further improvements to the area."

The Daily Echo first reported rumours that Tesco wanted to move into Canford Cliffs last year. At that time the company stopped short of confirming its intentions.

Abbey Commercial Ltd and Tesco Stores Ltd have now officially lodged the application with the Borough of Poole (BOP).

They're applying to install a new shopfront, demolish a 500sq ft outbuilding, alter rear facades, install two new external staircases and new plant equipment to the rear of the four units.

A design and access statement, submitted in support of the plans, concludes: "The proposal will facilitate the use of the four units to be amalgamated and used as a Tesco Express.

"The site in this location will provide ready access to good modern convenience provision in an area which currently has limited food retail provision."
