A POPULAR children's toy shop could be opening in Poole high street.

National chain The Entertainer has submitted a planning application to change the shopfront signage at the former McDonald's site in the High Street.

McDonald's closed its doors permanently in January this year after 34 years in business - just weeks after rival firm, Burger King’s lease ended in a unit further along the high street.

However it appears neither unit will remain empty for long.

Last week the Echo revealed plans had been submitted for a new place of worship and a Coffee#1 in the former Burger King building .

And now it appears The Entertainer has been making plans for the former McDonald's site.

The toy chain wants to take over the entire two-storey unit - but the public shop will only be on the ground floor with offices and storage on the first floor.

It is the latest in a long list of new developments happening in Poole town centre.

Just last month Delfino Lounge opened in Falkland Square and plans have also been submitted to re-vamp Maypole Square near the Guildhall.

Poole planners finally approved a development scheme for the former Corkers Cafe site, which has been empty and falling into disrepair for a number of years.

It will be replaced by a restaurant or shop and nine flats.

Poole BID has also been working on ways to improve the town centre with public WiFi and plans to install large LED screens.

Cllr Mohan Iyengar, cabinet member for economy, culture and leisure at Borough of Poole, said he welcomed the continuing improvements to the town centre - but said there is still a long way to go.

He told the Echo improving the High Street was "not going to be a "quick fix"

He said: "We have a big task in front of us during the day time making sure we have a modern and vibrant town centre. Once that is sorted we can start to think about improving the night time economy.

"Overall there are lots of exciting things happening and I'm sure more plans will be announced soon but we need to remember there are still lots of challenges ahead.

"We are not going to turn the High Street around with a quick fix.

"While there's plenty of plans afoot at the moment we want to ensure that this is not just a burst of activity.

"To turn the High Street and town centre into a fabulous and vibrant area is going to take time, but hopefully we will continue to see improvements."
