PART of a large bakery on a Poole industrial estate was evacuated following an ammonia leak.

The incident occurred at the Addo Food Group's Poole Bakery, Sterte, on Wednesday.

No-one was injured and the emergency services were not required, a company spokesman told the Daily Echo.

However, some workers contacted the Echo to raise concerns about how the leak was handled.

The Addo spokesman said: "Our Poole Bakery site was carrying out planned maintenance on an isolated section of its ammonia refrigeration plant which resulted in a small, controlled leak.

"As a precaution, part of the site was temporarily evacuated.

"Staff have been allowed back into the factory and the emergency services were not required to attend.

"No injuries were caused as a result of the leak."

Dorset Police and the Borough of Poole confirmed they were not asked to attend.

The Poole Bakery is home of the Walls brand, contains three bakeries under the same roof and produces hot pies, pork pies, sausage rolls, slices and pasties.

According to the company, the bakery produces around 1.5 million pies a week.
