MORE than 200 people tackled the tough SandStorm assault course at Bournemouth Beach on Sunday.

The 5km circuit, completed twice by participants, had been installed to raise money for the RNLI.

Competitors took on 20 obstacles, which included the ‘Rescue Run’, ‘Beach Burn’ and ‘Coastal Clamber’.

RNLI event logistics manager Becky Nelson said: “We had around 220 people, this is a pilot event. We’ll have a good look at things once we’ve finished, and the plan is to look at running a similar event next year.”

More than £10,000 has been raised for the sign-up fees alone, with more funds likely in the following days through individual sponsorship.

Becky said: “We were trying to make it more like a Tough Mudder-type event, a bit harsher than a fun run. It seems to have gone down really well with everyone today as well.”

Event organiser Lauren Pincott explained: “Any profits will help support the RNLI’s lifesaving work, so people could embrace the challenge with the knowledge that they were also doing their bit to help save lives at sea”
