THE stars of panto Cinderella joined the Mayor of Christchurch at the balcony of the Mayor's Parlour on Saturday evening to help light up the town.

Thousands of people from across the conurbation had turned out in their winter wear for the annual Christchurch Christmas Festival, which made for a rousing countdown.

Most were already lining the streets this afternoon for the Santa Parade, lit by torchlight.

The market was in full swing in the High Street and a queue snaked around Saxon Square for Santa in his grotto beneath the parlour.

There was also a host of hot food stalls, rides, and music from the locally-based Funky Little Choir.

Mayor Trish Jamieson said: "We are here to celebrate the start of Christmas.

"It is always one of the big events on the Christchurch calendar, going back as far as I can remember, and it is great to see so many people here. We have been lucky with the weather.

"The market is predominantly Christmas-related this year, with lots of things for children as well.

"Hopefully this will be a boost for local traders."

The event continues until late this evening and tomorrow with the market still in situ, music and refreshments at the Alpine Bar in Saxon Square.
