Poole's Twin Sails bridge was down to a single lane this morning.

Contractors are flattening the part of the carriageway that forms the cycle lane and will be on site until Friday.

Stop/Go boards were being used while cones were put out this morning to allow the workment to access kerbstones at the edge of the lane.

Bournemouth Echo:

Tony Parfett, a highway structures engineer for Borough of Poole, said: "We have cut the strip of kerb stones out of one side of the road and we are putting in new tarmac to take the cycle lane down to the same level as the road.

"We have replaced the kerb stones a couple of times. It's fine if cars drive over them, but lorries drive on them and they break, so we have decided to completely take them out.

"We have been keeping through traffic so there should be no delay to motorists."

He went on to say that all scheduled lifts of the Twin Sails Bridge would be carried out as normal.

Bournemouth Echo:

There are long queues building in both directions, compounded by the fact the second bridge is still closed for maintenance work.

The cycle lane has proved controversial, with eight cyclists currently pursuing legal action against the council after accidents.

Last week David McWilliam - head of personal injury at Ellis Jones in Bournemouth - told the Echo: “I am now acting for seven cyclists injured on the Twin Sails Bridge that have all been knocked off as a result of the raised kerb/upstand.

“Court proceedings have been issued and served on three of these claims. I am also aware of one other claim that another firm of solicitors are dealing with.

“My clients and I are concerned that now the lifting bridge is shut for nine months all traffic and cyclists will have to use the Twin Sails Bridge and there will be further accidents involving the kerb/upstand.”
