No-one was injured in the drama, and the fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters. However, all residents of the four-storey flat complex were evacuated until the scene could be declared safe.
DWFRS group manager James Plumley told the Daily Echo: "At approximately 1.04pm we were called to reports of a fire in a first floor flat, in a block of four flats."
Four fire crews from Westbourne, Springbourne, Redhill and Poole attended, along with the aerial ladder platform.
Mr Plumley said the fire was extinguished using two teams of two firefighters with breathing apparatus and hose reel jets.
"All persons have been accounted for, now there is an ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire." he added. "Approximately eight families have been displaced."
