THOUSANDS of people came out to support Poole Carnival today.

The procession, which made its way along Ashley Road, Parkstone, and onto Alder Road, finished at Branksome Recreation Ground, where a host of activities took place throughout the afternoon.

Organisers said the 1.9-mile route was one of the best in the event's history.

Mayor of Poole Cllr Xena Dion, and Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner Martyn Underhill, officially launched the procession and opened proceedings at the recreation ground.

Poole Carnival chairman Richard Wilson told the Daily Echo: “It has been fantastic, we've had a few thousand people here at least.

"I'd like to thank the mayor and Martyn Underhill for their support, and the support of Poole council and everyone on the carnival committee.

"We've had lovely weather in the end, so couldn't be happier.

"The procession was absolutely beautiful, I cannot remember it being so colourful."

Meanwhile, attractions at Branksome Recreation Ground included numerous stalls, demonstrations, a fun fair and refreshments.

Visitor Darren Jenkins said: "We come along to this most years, it may not get as much press as other Dorset carnivals, but thousands of people obviously really like it.

"It is just nice to be out and about in your local area. Poole can often play second fiddle to Bournemouth, so we should support local events more."

Another carnival visitor said: "The procession was lovely, obviously a lot of time and effort has gone into this. Long may it continue."

This year there were street collections in aid of Gully's Place and the Diverse Abilities Lilypad Appeal.

Mr Wilson said: "It's been absolutely fantastic here at the recreation ground, we've got plenty going on, live music, a flower show. Thank you to everyone for coming out and supporting us."
