THE iconic Razer has been dumped out of television's Robot Wars in the first round.

Cult favourite Robot Wars returned to our screens at the weekend, and Razer - designed and built by Bournemouth's Ian Lewis and Simon Scott - had been fancied as a series winner.

Going into Sunday's first episode of the new series, Razer had been recognised as one of the most successful robot competitors in the show's history.

However, tragedy stuck in Razer's first round encounter when it was dragged into one of the arena pits by a competitor and dumped out of the contest.

Viewers, who were not happy about Razer's early shock exit, took to Twitter to complain. One fan tweeted: "Genuinely gutted Razer is out. Absolute mare! #robotwars".

And another: "OMG Razer's gone?? Unbelievable! #RobotWars".

Razer gained a massive fan following as champion of the fifth series.

It was also runner-up in the sixth series, and won the first two Robot Wars World Championships.

Its main weapon is its ripping hydraulic piercer which applies an impressive three tonnes of pressure.

Following the format of the original series, which aired on television from 1998 to 2002, teams of amateur roboteers go head-to-head with the sole purpose of destroying their competitor's machine.

House robots such as Sir Killalot, Shunt and Sergeant Bash, which took on competitors under the watchful eye of host Craig Charles and pit reporter Philippa Forrester, have also made a comeback in 2016.

However, the latest series is being fronted by Dara O’Briain and Angela Scanlon.

Robot Wars will continue to be screened every Sunday at 8pm.
