ARTS University Bournemouth's innovative drawing studio has scooped three high-profile, regional awards.

The project, built by Morgan Sindall, was named Best Innovative Project and Best Building, at the South West Built Environment Awards, which recognises the best of the construction industry in the region.

It was also recently honoured at the prestigious RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) South West Awards, which celebrates the best architectural design in the regions and will now go forward to be considered for the national RIBA awards.

The freestanding steel pre-fabricated pavilion was specially designed to stimulate creativity by influential architect, AUB alumnus and Honorary Fellow, Professor Sir Peter Cook RA and his office CRAB (Cook Robotham Architectural Bureau) and was opened earlier this year by renowned architect, Dame Zaha Hadid.

The futuristic studio includes a large north-light, which is traditional in studios, a rear clerestory window light that gives a softer light from the rear wall, a discrete light that filters under a bench on the east side of the building and a graded wash of light that feeds in along the curved entrance. The different lights are designed to reflect the central theme of light in the tradition of looking and drawing.

The building will now go forward to the national Constructing Excellence Awards, where it will be pitted against the best regional schemes from across the country.

Professor Stuart Bartholomew CBE, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, AUB, said: "The Drawing Studio provides students with a new space in which drawing can be taught and practised. We believe the simplicity of the monocoque construction allows the act of drawing to become a calm and considered activity within the lively world of a very busy, creative institution. We are delighted that this beautiful building has won such prestigious recognition."
