Sweet company Mars has said it is recalling chocolates in the UK after a piece of plastic was found in one of its products.

A German customer found some red plastic in a Snickers bar in January. After an investigation the company said it was taking the "precautionary step" following an "isolated incident".

The products involved were made at a factory in the Netherlands and have best before dates from 19 June 2016 to 8 January 2017.

The recall applies in 55 countries and the chocolates affected in Britain include Celebrations, Mars Funsize, Milky Way Funsize and Snickers Miniatures.

The US company has not said how many bars are affected or how much the recall will cost it.

Mars' German website, www.mars.de, which has a list of all affected products, was not working this afternoon.

A spokesperson for Mars said: “This is an isolated incident. No other varieties of chocolate, pack formats or bar sizes are affected in the UK and no other best before dates or products manufactured at any other location are impacted.”

Customers who are concerned can call Mars on 0800 952 0084.
