SWIM Bournemouth’s Jay Lelliott and Poole’s Jacob Peters both returned from Sheffield as national record holders after title-winning swims at the ASA National Winter Championships.

Lelliott, 20, carved more than four seconds off the English short-course record as he won the 1500m freestyle in 14min 36.49sec.

The previous mark had been set by Olympic 1500m freestyler Ian Wilson in 1995.

Rio 2016 hopeful Lelliott, who was swimming for Bath University, said: “I’m pleased although I had my eye on the British record if I’m honest. My nerves got the better of me a little. I went out ridiculously fast and, at about the 1100m-mark, I could really feel the lead in my legs.”

He was six seconds outside the British record, set by David Davies in 2004.

Lelliott also won the 400m freestyle in 3:38.60, just two seconds shy of the British record, held by world champion James Guy.

Peters became the fastest British junior in two events as he won five junior titles at Ponds Forge.

The 15-year-old, already a national age group and Sainsbury’s School Games champion in 2015, rounded off a successful year with junior short-course titles in the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly and 50m and 100m backstroke.

He was the only junior to make the 200m butterfly senior final and the 100m fly B final as he broke British junior records in the 50 and 100m fly with times of 24.82 and 54.46. He also set Dorset junior records in these and five other events – the 50 and 100m backstroke (26.22 and 56.44), 50 and 100m freestyle (24.12 and 57.32) and 200m fly (2:00.74).

Two other Poole swimmers broke Dorset records. Harriet Perfect set senior and junior figures in the 100m backstroke (1:02.82) and a junior record in the 50m back (30.12). Jazz McCrea broke the junior 50m butterfly record (28.63). Emily Clarke made the B final of the 50m freestyle and was 18th in the 800m freestyle.

Clarke, McCrea, Jasmine Holmes and Thea O’Keefe came eighth in the 4x200m freestyle relay final.

Two other Poole relay teams came 13th – Clarke, Madison Kemp, O’Keefe and Holmes (4x100m freestyle) and Perfect, Kemp, McCrea and Holmes (4x100m medley).
