FIRE crews battled a blaze at a house near Wimborne on Thursday morning.

Four crews were sent to the scene in Wimborne Road West.

A spokesperson for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said they were called at 8.01am.

An aerial ladder platform was also sent.

Firefighters used seven sets of breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to battle the blaze.

Wimborne Road West was blocked both ways between Hayes Lane and Ham Lane. Traffic was being directed by police officers.

One eyewitness said: "It was a dramatic scene. There were four fire engines outside the house and firefighters running in and out.

"All the windows in the house are open and there was an ambulance outside the property."

A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service said they were called at 8.05am by the fire service, as a precaution.

Incident commander, Dave Gale said appliances from Wimborne and Ferndown were initially called to the scene, followed by crews from Redhill and Poole.

He said the fire was in the loft area, and crews were carrying out salvage work.

The cause is not yet known but the homeowner did have a working smoke alarm.

Fire crews were able to leave the scene at 10.16am.
