One person has been injured after a serious accident involving two cars in North Dorset.

The incident took place in Shaftesbury, between the Fifehead Magdalen turn off, Kington Magna and Henstridge Marsh.

The A30 is closed in both directions.

A spokesman for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that people were cut out of the cars by firefighters.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "At 9.38am Dorset Police were called by the ambulance service to attend a two vehicle road traffic collision on the A30 near to Common Lane, Kington Magna, Gillingham.

"Police, fire and ambulance are currently at the scene and dealing with the incident.

"There are currently road closures on the A30 due to the incident."

A spokesperson for Dorset Fire and Rescue said: "We were called a 9.31am. We sent two appliances, both from Sherborne.

"Firefighters released people from a car but it is not known how many."

A spokesman for the South Western Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 9.30am to reports of a two vehicle road traffic collision.

"We sent a rapid response vehicle and three ambulances.

"One person was taken to Yeovil Hospital, but it is unclear how serious their injuries are."

The road remains closed but is set to be reopened shortly by police, as the vehicles are waiting to be recovered.
