HOLDENHURST Village was alive with the Sound of Music on Saturday for the annual fete.

And the village's annual themed scarecrow display also proved popular once again, with crowds turning out in force for the traditional fete, with games, stalls and activities for all.

The main display, based on this year's Sound of Music theme, was positioned outside Alan Sharp's house in the village centre.

With the whole Von Trapp family represented, there was also room for the Reverend Mother, messenger boy, Rolfe, Nazi official, Herr Zeller, a goat and of course, a mountain.

Around the village, other characters and scenes from the hit musical starring Julie Andrews were featured, much to the amusement of visitors to the event.

Mr Sharp said: "From the planning stage, it takes about two months for the village to create this.

"It looks wonderful.

"Our MP, Tobias Ellwood, helped to create the nun in this display as well.

"We've had lots of comments on it. A delivery driver told me yesterday she would take this route again just to see them."

Villager, Reverend Janice Seare, added: "I had the idea to do this last year.

"I saw the blonde wig on a scarecrow in the wedding display and thought that would be great for the Sound of Music.

"People just stop and stare and they really like it.

"All the hard work has been the whole village.

"We couldn't do it without them."

Alongside the display, including a Doe a Deer scene on the village green bench, there was music, readings and a display of art from the Holdenhurst Art Group.

Youngsters were entertained with facepainting, a bouncy castle and children's corner, while stalls selling jam, fresh produce, bric-a-brac and books, were busy throughout the afternoon.

Visitors were seen enjoying picnics on the village green, with other tasty treats on sale as well.

The scarecrows will be available for the next week.
