A MAN has captured footage of barrel jellyfish swimming in the water off Branksome Chine.

David Trehane, 42, says that he is part of Branksome Chine Surf Lifesavers Club so he often sees the creatures floating in the sea in Poole and decided to film them using a Go Pro camera on Thursday evening.

He said: "They're quite beautiful. The jellies are everywhere from Baiter to Hengistbury Head so you can't help but see them.

"I went out with the Go Pro to see what we could find. I paddled over on the board and then jumped in the sea to find that under the water, there were two swimming around."

David added that it is sad to see the jellyfish that have washed up on the sand. The video finishes with a clip of one on the beach, which members of the lifesaving club had tried to edge back into the water but David says that it was already dead.

Asked what the response has been from people who have seen the footage of the jellyfish in the water, he said: "It has been fantastic. On Facebook, people have been quite pleased to have it."

David says that he is responsible for the Nippers group, aged eight to 12, of the Branksome Chine Surf Lifesavers Club, and while the children can see the jellyfish, they don't get too close to them.

He added: "It's inevitable that they are going to see the jellyfish because of the nature of the club, we are in the water all the time.

"However, as a surf lifesaving club, we teach the members to be aware of what is in the sea and to respect the sea life in the water. The whole purpose of the club is to teach them safety in the water."
