FROM fires to flooding, volunteers from the Dorset Fire and Emergency Support Team are always there to help.

And this May they joined together to mark the fifth anniversary of the service's launch.

Those who provide practical and emotional support to people affected by emergencies at home gathered at Springbourne Fire Station to share a cake last week.

They were joined by representatives from the police, the Borough of Poole Emergency Planning Team, Streetwise and Bournemouth University.

The British Red Crossfire and emergency support (FES) service launched on May 20, 2010, and its dedicated volunteers have since helped 354 households affected by crises.

Klara Downing, FES co-ordinator for Dorset, said: “We have an amazing bunch of dedicated volunteers of all ages who offer their services 24/7 to help local people deal with house fires, flooding and other emergencies.

"We also have an excellent partnership with Dorset Fire and Rescue Service, other ‘blue light’ services and the local authority.”

Despite the successes of the team, new volunteers are needed, and Klara said anyone willing to help offer support to those in a crisis are urged to get in touch.

“Volunteers must be at least eighteen years old but there is no upper age limit," she said.

"We have young people gaining important experience as well as older, retired people who are looking for new challenges.

“Sometimes our volunteers offer practical support but sometimes it’s a listening ear and a cup of tea and that’s just as important.”

Retired Peter Robinson, 66, of Bournemouth, has been a volunteer with Dorset FES since April 2013.

He has been shortlisted for a Pride of Britain award, and said volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, make friends and fill his spare time now that he is retired.

He said: “I felt that after my wife’s death I wanted to give something back to society for all the care that she received.

"You never know what to expect from a FES call. You could be supporting someone at the scene of a house fire or helping someone who’s been evacuated because of flooding.

“One Christmas Day at 4am three of us were called to Boscombe Day Centre to help people evacuated from a flooded caravan park. People had been rescued by boat and they arrived with wet feet and trousers.

“Our FES vehicle is well equipped with everything people may need in an emergency. We gave clothes, trainers, hygiene packs, towels and blankets to the people as they arrived.

“It’s an honour to be part of the Red Cross. I feel privileged and I get a lot of personal satisfaction. I really enjoy it.”
