TWO Bournemouth town centre roads will be closed off as a major roadwork scheme enters its final stages.

St Stephen’s Road will be closed at its junction with Richmond Hill between Monday, March 23 and Thursday, April 2 and Yelverton Road will be closed at its junction with Richmond Hill for two days during this period.

Diversion routes will be put in place and pedestrian access to businesses and properties will be maintained at all times during the works.

Ian Kalra, head of transportation services, said: “In order to carry out these improvements and maintain the safety of site operatives and road users, we need to close the junction with St Stephen’s Road for approximately 11 days.

“We would urge drivers to plan ahead when travelling in this area. Please be reassured that we are doing all we can to keep disruption to a minimum while these works are completed.

“We would like to remind everyone that all businesses in this area will still remain open and access maintained.”

The government-funded Three Towns Travel scheme is part of Bournemouth’s largest ever transport programme to try and tackle future congestion.

Cllr Michael Filer, cabinet member for transport, said: “Once complete, the scheme at Richmond Hill will create a safer and more welcoming environment for the many visitors, commuters and shoppers who use this part of town.”

It includes new continental-style cycle lanes, crossing facilities, cycle stands, trees and seating areas. A 20mph zone will also be introduced.
