FOR a pure driving experience, there are still few that can compare to Porsche.

The marque needs no introduction, but the range that it offers the modern customer really does have a wide appeal – from stripped back track-orientated machines to luxury SUVs.

And for those who might not have 911 money, or just fancy something a bit different from the archetypal Porsche, the Cayman, alongside the soft-top Boxster, offers a great way to join the club.

I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for the Cayman and this latest version certainly doesn’t disappoint.

It maintains that classic Porsche look, of course, but it’s that little flick of the tail and slightly softer front end that gives it its own personality.

The driving experience is what it’s all about, though, and the Cayman has to be one of the best sports cars out there.

It’s solid and poised and when the 275hp 2.7-litre flat six winds up behind you it’s a superb mix of noise and power.

Put your foot down and 62mph arrives in a mere 5.7 seconds – 5.6 with the PDK auto ‘box.

The power delivery is smooth and progressive, with a meaty feeling behind it. Find yourself an airfield and it’ll get you all the way to 165mph.

It doesn’t come with a major hit to your pocket, either. On everyday driving you can achieve mid-30s to the gallon and CO2 stands at a not-too-shabby 195g/km.

Inside, it’s a nice mix of sporty and comfortable, with bells and buttons including heated seats, sat nav, a tasty sound system, air con and adaptive cruise control.

There’s more than an element of practicality too, with the mid-engine layout meaning that you’ve got decent storage both front and back.

It all adds up to an intoxicating package – a hearty, rewarding, sports car that you can use every day.

Prices start from £39,640 for the Cayman, with the more powerful Cayman S from £48,783 and the full-blooded GTS from £55,397.
