SPEEDING drivers have been caught on camera at speeds up to 123mph in Dorset and Hampshire, according to shocking new figures.

And a Dorset traffic cop has branded anyone driving at such speeds as “stupid and reckless”.

Police forces revealed the top five offenders of 2014 in their area following a request for informa-tion by the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

And the figures made shocking reading across the two counties, with speeds between 123mph and 99 mph recorded.

In Dorset, a driver was caught travelling at 104mph on a northbound stretch of the A338 Spur Road and at 102mph on the A31 Ringwood Road at St Leonards.

Speeds of 102mph, 100mph and 99mph were also recorded on the Spur Road but the highest was 110mph on the A35 Tolpuddle bypass, eastbound.

In Hampshire, the three top speeds – 123mph, 122mph and 114mph – were all recorded on the A31 with two records of 113mph on the A331 and A303.

Sergeant Stuart Pitman of Dorset Police said: “Anyone travelling at speeds like this on any road in Dorset is stupid and reckless. Not only do you put yourself at risk, but the lives of other innocent road users.

“Motorists caught excessively speeding risk going to court and losing their licence. “Dorset Police’s dedicated ‘no excuse’ team was set up to tackle bad driving such as this. The team operates 24 hours a day seven days a week – we could be any-where at any time.”

Figures were requested from all forces in England and Wales, with the two worst speeders of 2014 were caught by Kent Police, both travelling on the M25.

One was travelling anti-clockwise at junc-tion 5 at Clacket Lane Services and the other clockwise at Swanley.

There were three other examples of speeds of more than 140mph, on the M6 toll road, A41 Great Ponton road and A5 Crick road.
