A £1.5MILLION project to improve Bournemouth rail station and give visitors a better first impression of the town will begin tomorrow.

The work will include major changes to the layout of the station, more accessible bus, taxi and cycling facilities and better signage.

There will also be improvements to the train station’s facilities and canopy.

The works are part of Bournemouth council’s Three Towns Travel scheme to tackle future congestion. Funding has come from the Government and from partner South West Trains-Network Rail Alliance.

The alterations to the layout will be carried out in a phased approach to try and minimise disruption.

Access to train, bus and coach services will be maintained at all times but commuters are being warned that short stay car-parking and car drop-off facilities for rail passengers will only be available on the London bound side of the train station.

There will be a car drop-off area available for disabled passengers on the Weymouth bound side of the train station and all other passenger access to the train station will be maintained.

The projected should be completed by late 2015.

Bournemouth station manager John Collins said: “We are delighted to be working with Bournemouth council on these enhancements.

“The improvements will play a significant role in creating a great first impression of our town to visitors.

“Over the next few months we’ll be working hard on the changes whilst reassuring all our visitors that it’s business as usual at Bournemouth Station.”

Cllr Michael Filer, cabinet member for transport at Bournemouth council, said: “The improvements at the station will provide a better experience for those arriving in Bournemouth by coach and train and looking to travel elsewhere in the town.

“By providing better sustainable travel options we can encourage more people to travel by bike, public transport and walking.”
