IF you’re a business that drives about 100 miles a day around, say, the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch conurbation, the new Nissan e-NV200 has got to be worth serious consideration.

Brought to you by the firm that pioneered the first genuinely-useable electric car, the LEAF, it seems to make a lot of sense.

It’s a medium-size van and Nissan is making the proud claim that it is the most economical commercial vehicle ever produced.

And that’s not without merit – it has a range of about 100 miles and is, of course, emission-free.

We’ll start with the drive – as with all electric vehicles, power is immediate and swift.

If you need some grunt it’s there, but, if you’re able, you can use eco mode, which boosts the range.

Coupled with the regenerative mode, which feels like heavy engine braking, you’re optimising your eco-ness.

Away from the powertrain, there are two body options – traditional van or a passenger version – and inside you get plenty of gizmos, should you require.

They include rear view camera, Bluetooth, electric windows, climate control and the like, depending on trim level.

Of course, aside from its 703kg load capacity, cost of ownership compared to traditional power will be uppermost on most businesses’ minds.

Basic price is very good – with base spec Acenta at £13,393, ex-VAT, after the Government’s electric car incentive.

Top-end Tekna Rapid Plus is £16,155. So, it’s affordable.

Those prices apply if you lease the battery – between £61 and £106 a month depending on length of term and mileage and including breakdown cover.

Without battery leasing, you’re looking at £16,562 to £19,324 – so either option seems good.

There are finance deals from as little as £217 a month – which is probably akin to what many companies spend on fuel per month.

For those who run around town all day, this really could be the future – imagine how clean the air would be if every commercial vehicle was like this.
