A BOURNEMOUTH lap dancing club’s bid to renew its sex establishment licence has prompted a handful of objections.

For Your Eyes Only in Old Christchurch Road has applied to Bournemouth council to renew its licence for another 12 months.

But the application has sparked five objections from people urging councillors to turn it down.

The names and addresses of the objectors have not been made public by the council, but all are arguing that the club is in an unsuitable location, near to a synagogue and St Peter’s Church, and that there are too many sexual entertainment venues in the town.

One states: “The council have been making excellent efforts to clean up the town centre, so this licence renewal presents another opportunity to provide a strong message to local people that ‘we will do better than this,’ to demonstrate that Bournemouth is a family friendly town, and that its leaders are proud of what the town stands for.”

Another argues: “The renewal of this licence runs contrary to the forward strides made by the recent development scheme. Efforts to upgrade the Horseshoe Common area into a safe, welcoming and respectable area that attracts a broad segment of the retail market might be inhibited by the presence of the applicant operating as a strip club.”

And another adds: “It is my belief that Bournemouth’s growing reputation as a place for wholesome family fun will be inevitably compromised by a proliferation of such commercial premises.”

No other authority, including Dorset Police, has objected to the licence being renewed.

Cllr David Smith, town centre ward councillor, said he sympathised with objectors’ concerns.

“In a perfect world we don’t want any of these establishments in Bournemouth, however the law as it is written makes it extremely difficult for us to stop these premises,” he said.

The application will be considered by Bournemouth’s licensing committee on Tuesday.
