FOUR teams of female footballers battled it out to take home the trophy and raise funds for Breast Cancer Care.
The Corfe Mullen Royal British Legion Community Cup was won by Portsmouth FC Ladies, who beat Corfe Mullen Juniors Under 16 on penalties.
Canford Park Arena’s artificial surface was the venue for the event which was sponsored by Corfe Mullen RBL and also included Wimborne Town Under 16 and a team of girls from Hertfordshire.
“At the moment we have collected £665,” said organiser Robbie Marsden, adding there might be some money more to come. “I am quite pleased with that.”
With close friends and family members having been diagnosed with cancer he asked Paul Vivian if his Corfe Mullen under 16 girls team would be interested in a charity game against another girls side as a way of raising funds.
“I had clearly underestimated his enthusiasm and drive for girls football,” he said. “A one off game became a four team tournament and also a great opportunity to raise money for a good cause.
“We quickly agreed that Breast Cancer Care would be chosen as the receiving charity as it seems a perfect fit with a girl’s football tournament.”
He added: “There is not another 11-a-side tournament for girls in Dorset throughout the year.”
The day had been a great success he said, and thanked everyone who took part and supported the event.
“Maybe next year we will hold another charity fund raising event of some sort with a darts tournament or some other activity,” he said.
