Rico Dardis: murderers jailed for life

Bournemouth Echo: Rico Dardis: Accused found guilty of murder Rico Dardis: Accused found guilty of murder

THE men who murdered Bournemouth dad Rico Dardis have been jailed for life.

Paul Gerlach and Louis Borzoni were found guilty of the killing by a jury after a three week trial, which heard the pair pushed the intoxicated 30-year-old into the sea on May 27 last year after a fight broke out.

Mr Dardis drowned while the defendants taunted him and circled him in Gerlach's speedboat No Chance.

Then Gerlach drove the speedboat over the father-of-one's lifeless body, dismembering it.

The Hon Mr Justice Blake said Mr Dardis's last conscious memory was likely to have been the sound of the propeller approaching.

Sentencing at Winchester Crown Court, he said: "Neither of you have shown any remorse for his death. You have shown a callous disregard for his dignity as a human being."

He said the pair had done nothing to help Mr Dardis in the water or offer him "some slim chance of survival".

"You, Mr Gerlach, deliberately drove the boat over him, causing catastrophic injuries.

"You, Mr Borzoni, were aware of what he was going to do and were in agreement with it."

He added: "You have deprived a family of a son, and as his former partner makes clear, deprived a nine-year-old of a father and that relationship and guidance for the rest of his life."

Gerlach, 51, of no fixed abode, was given a minimum term of 17 years before becoming eligible for parole, while Borzoni, 50, of Hamilton Road, Boscombe, was given a 15-year minimum term.

In mitigation, it was argued that the murder had been preceded by a fight, and was not premeditated.

The body of Mr Dardis, of Hawkwood Mews, Boscombe, was found washed up beside the boat near groynes at Seaway Avenue, Friar’s Cliff, Christchurch.

In a victim impact statement read to the court his partner Paula, the mother of his nine-year-old son, told of the devastating moment when they heard he had been found dead.

Rico Dardis's family: 'It's been the most heartbreaking time of our lives'

RICO Dardis’s family, who sat in court throughout the trial and during the sentencing, said in a statement: "Rico was a loving, caring son, brother and dad.

"We have been blessed to have had him in our lives.

"Rico's ability to bring laughter to people in any situation was infectious. Rico was able to light up any room.

"The horrific way Rico lost his life will stay with us forever. It has been the most difficult and heartbreaking time of our lives.

"But his light and spirit will live on, and we will make him proud and remain strong as a family unit.

"We would like to thank Dorset Police for all their hard work; and the prosecution, Mr Bowes and Miss Squires.

"A special thank you to DS Webster and DC Todd, whose help and support has kept us going through this past year."

Can't believe it took them a day to be honest - it's the most blatant case of murder I've seen in a long time.

From what I've read, it's clear Rico Dardis was no angel and had some form of addiction problem but no one deserves to die what must have been an horrific death just because two drunks got a bit annoyed with him.

Horrible case. Hope they get long sentences. Sounds like they're a right pair of wasters anyway.

On a side note, I really wish the Echo's coverage had been more consistent. First two days were great and the first part of Gerlach's evidence (live updates from the court) but it was sporadic at best after that.

It waits to be seen if the Judge will attach any blame to Rico for this. Will his own behaviour be held against him. He was out on the boat with these 2 who he considered friends. I doubt the Judge believes this happened for no reason.

Well, it matters because if it hadn't been for his addiction, I very much doubt he'd have been with this pair of losers. Maybe he would have been spending the bank holiday with his son instead who he hadn't seen for three months IIRC.....? Just a thought.

However, like I said earlier, he must have suffered a truly agonising and horrendous death, all because he made a bad choice and was, at worst, probably a bit of a pain that day. Did he deserve that? Absolutely not.

I do not believe he "turned" on Gerlach & Borzoni. Witness reports suggest he was the one sitting quietly whilst they were arguing with each other. No, I think one of them (probably Gerlach as he'd only met him that day) was angry that all his booze had been drank, all his fags had been smoked and decided, in clearly a very inebriated state, to exact a horrific and total over the top form of revenge.

And then to joke about it to several people (criminal masterminds they are not) and not even be the slighest bit remorseful when they'd sobered up is really disgusting.

Probably in todays legal system

Dont get involved or else you may become the accused.

Or dont get involved because she is a **** and needs a good slap.

Either way, these days, all you can do safely is film it and put it on YouTube.

That is the trouble with all these addicts they live in a haze and then turn on each other when the goodies have run out and reality bites and they cannot handle it.
Rico sounds like a piece of work in his own right, but had he led a sensible normal life got a job and spent his time with his family then none of this would have happened.
Those sentences are pathetic as well.

There is a lot of truth in this. Addiction and subsequent homelessness as a result changes people. It makes them do things they swore they'd never do and things you thought that person just wasn't capable of when you knew them. Addicts are selfish. Lives become chaotic, transient, hopeless. Everything becomes about getting the next hit. They turn on each other. There is a lot of violence in that world. It's a ongoing struggle for survival.

All these comments about how Rico was such a kind hearted soul.... RUBBISH!!!!!... The last time I saw good old Rico he was beating the hell out of a girl outside McDonald's and kicked in the head that hard her ear was pouring blood. So please let's not bleat about how much of a gentleman he was. I agree he didn't deserve to die in such a horrific way but PLEASE STOP THE SAINT RICO BULL!!!!!!
I have no idea whether their accounts or yours are true. However, if you saw a man beating a woman, why didn't you do something about it?
Would you like me to tell you the weather forecast for that day too?... what I did or didn't do is irrelevant. This discussion isn't about me it's about Rico Dardis who on the night in question beat the living daylights out of a girl. Which really is all that matters

You're all entitled to your memories of Rico, but they differ entirely from mine. I will be always grateful I met Rico when I did. I left home at 13, slept rough and met Rico. He stayed with me all night, I was scared and so grateful to this kind stranger. I got put in a kids home, ran by nounces and everytime I ran away (which was often) I would bump into Rico. He always had my back, I was 13 - 18 yrs old at these times, and extremely vulnerable. Rico would sit by me so I could sleep. He would share his food and money and anything else he had that I needed. I was raped and beaten, 20 maybe 30 people walked past while I screamed for help. Rico heard and came running from 2 streets away. Another time he found me and called an ambulance. At 18 I left boscombe, was finally able to rent and got a small studio in bomo town centre. Over the 8 years I was there I would see Rico about alot in the town centre. I remember him disappearing and I looked everywhere. Turns out he had been banged up. I saw him a little while after. He told me he had a child and was so proud. He was turning his life around. He always made me smile, he always made me feel safe and he was a friend when I had none. I won't ever forget that. Was he a nightmare to others at times, I have no doubt, but so was I... And probably if I was to ask the people who weren't as found of you, they would say the same. To the person who did his family couldn't stand him... You are stupid, naive at best. I didn't talk to my mum for years, I do now, those nights I slept rough, the times the hospital or carers would call her, eye no doubt 100 times worse for her than me. His family loved him, may not have been happy with him the whole time (as is life) but my god they loved him. As do I. Rest easy Rico xx
