THE outgoing chairman of East Dorset District Council has raised £7,500 for his two chosen charities.

Councillor Malcolm Birr helped to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care and Home-Start South East Dorset during his year in office.

The money will be split equally between the two.

Funds were raised through a variety of activities, including a race night, a concert at the Barrington Centre in Ferndown, collections at Sainsbury’s stores and the raffling of a painting of Wimborne Minster specially provided by local artist, Paul Dolman.

Cllr Birr said: "I am delighted that we have been able to raise so much in aid of my two charities. I am most grateful to so many people who helped and gave so generously to help these worthy causes."

Cheques were presented to representatives of the two charities at the annual council meeting which marked the end of Cllr Birr’s year of office.
