WITH the weather warming up, many bikers will be hoping to hit the road and enjoy life on two wheels.
PC Chris Smith, Dorset’s BikeSafe co-ordinator, has put together a few tips to make sure that those bringing their bikes out of hibernation can do so safely.
He says:
- Check your bike before you ride, is it roadworthy and road legal.
- Make sure your kit is still fit for use. Most PPE have a shelf life.
- Pick a route you know. Consider how the weather may have affected the road surface. Many surfaces have badly deteriorated over the winter, don’t expect your route to be the same this year.
- Your first ride should be like taking a dealer’s demonstrator out, ensure you get back in one piece.
- Consider brushing up your skills. A BikeSafe course is a great way to MOT your riding before the roads get too busy.
- Finally, if you are heading to the Poole Quay Bike Nights don’t think that six months off allows you to try and sneak in without valid tax, MOT and insurance. The police are checking.
