AN 18-year-old man from Bournemouth has died after his car crashed into a tree on a minor road near Ashley Heath roundabout on Saturday morning.

At around 8.50am emergency services were called to Hurn Road, which runs alongside the A338 southbound, after the teenager's green Renault Clio veered into a tree on the opposite side of the road and crashed into a garden fence.

Local resident Dennis Thompson said: “I was indicating to turn off and just saw the car heading towards the tree,” he said.

“I pulled up and got out of my car and then we spotted him.

Along with another driver, Mr Thompson stopped passers-by in a bid to find help.

He said he started stopping traffic and found a woman who was a nurse who tried to help the youngster.

Police officers, paramedics and a doctor flown in by air ambulance, arrived at the scene and attempted to save the young man.

Despite their efforts he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Floral tributes and messages have been left at the scene.

Traffic Sergeant Joe Pardey said an investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the collision.

Speaking from the scene on Saturday he said: “We were called to a single vehicle collision at around 8.50am this morning.

“The Clio left the road and collided with a tree and the 18-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Our collision investigators are working to try and establish the cause of why the vehicle left the road.

"We would like to appeal for any witnesses who may have seen that vehicle this morning.”

Anyone who saw the vehicle prior to the collision is asked to contact PC Rob Freeman of Dorset Police Traffic unit on 101.

Only one Pete and that is to give the Echo reporter a map being this accident happened on the Hurn Road and not on the Horton Road the road where Ashley Heath is situated. One out of ten though for knowing that the Hurn Road does run by the side of the A338.

Just to confirm I didn't know the guy in the accident, not sure if that's how you interpreted my comment, but yes, the sentiment remains the same, a sad time for his friends and family.

I think the majority of us are in agreement with Pete Woodley, this is not the time or place to lay blame or make baseless assumptions on what may or may not have happened.

All we know is a young man has lost his life which must be deeply upsetting for those he left behind.

Maybe in time when we learn more we can discuss road safety etc etc but for the time being I think it best to leave those topics alone.

Despite attention seeking comments by other people, my Son In Law was the first person on the scene, looking at the car he could not see anybody in there, just as he was about to drive away he heard music coming from the vehicle, he immediately went over to the car and discovered the young man inside severely injured, despite climbing inside he could not get the doors open so remained there until the Police arrived, the whole experience and what he saw has left him severely traumatised. The injuries could perhaps have been less severe had the poor man been wearing his seat belt, a lesson for us all. May he rest in peace.

May I congratulate your son-in- law for stopping and doing such a brave thing
I have been in the same position and it is a traumatising experience and something you never get over. As you say I hope this is a lesson not to just the young drivers out there but to ALL drivers PLEASE BELT UP.
