Tensions flare after Gypsy Council accuses Borough of Poole of failing travellers by not providing permanent sites

THE Gypsy Council has accused Borough of Poole of failing gypsies and travellers by not providing permanent sites in the borough.

Joe Jones, chairman of the Gypsy Council, has also hit out at “disgusting behaviour” from councillors in treating the matter as a “political football”.

He said: “Councillors are creating racial tensions and anti-social behaviour from the wider community. What they are failing to say is that it is through their lack of commitment to identify land suitable for gypsy and traveller occupation, lack of carrying out policy, that has created the situation within the borough.”

Borough of Poole has identified two temporary transit sites, at Creekmoor and Oakdale, due to go before the planning committee in March, which have been opposed by residents and ward councillors. There is a residential site of 15 pitches at Mannings Heath which was completely refurbished within the last 10 years.

He added: “This disgusting behaviour from elected members has to stop. They are elected to represent every member of society, not to vilify and dogmatise those who have no power to change the situation.”

There seemed to be a consensus of where gypsies and travellers could not stay but a lack of information about where they could, he said and urged the community, MPs and councillors to get together to identify suitable land.

Council leader, Cllr Elaine Atkinson, said the council did not condone racial abuse or any behaviour contrary to the Equalities Act. She said they had worked hard to balance the needs of residents with the needs of the gypsy and traveller community.

It had not been possible to identify a suitable permanent transit site but they were seeking a change in legislation to enable a joint provision with neighbours, she said.

“Poole and Bournemouth have similar problems in that they have boundaries with each other, heathland to the north and the sea to the south,” she added.

“Rather than ignore the problem, the council, in consultation with the police and residents across the borough, decided to look at the provision of a temporary stopping place for 2014,” she said.

They had a permanent site at Mannings Heath. People who were born in Poole and work and pay taxes are struggling to find somewhere affordable to live so why should we worry about people who weren't a born here and who don't pay their way

I may be wrong but I thought that sites for caravans were plentiful in this area, one only has to Google 'caravan sites Dorset' to get many, many hits.
Why don't Joe Jones and his friends do that to find somewhere to park their caravans?
Perhaps the only snag is that they will have to pay to use these sites and leave them in the same condition as when they moved in?

So who were the residents that had the honour of being consulted? Specifically, which residents were consulted on site selection? I see little or no evidence of this?

I would imagine this "creating racial tensions" problem could be very easily solved by a change in UK law and no longer recognising these 'travellers' as an ethnic race - it is a vote winner!

Then providing our hapless Authorities finally grow some every other issue would resolve itself!

What on earth is Elaine Atkinson, talking about mentioning racial tensions? They aren't a race just a bunch if people who prefer live off the rest if the population, scrounge steal and not contribute to society bullying their way through life and demanding special treatment. If anywhere is provided to them they should pay rent just like the rest if society has to pay their way. They should also demonstrate where the income came from to buy all those new BMW's, Mercedes etc AND show their tax returns. Unfortunately the politically correct and spineless local and central government won't forcibly apply the same rules to this underclass of people that apply to the rest of society.

Big fat gypsy wedding (it's a TV program echo censor) is a wonderful insight to a tax evading inconsiderate group of lawless parasites.

Lots of land in branksome park. Just need to clear some underestablished trees. Where are the other 88 sites that had been identified and binned as not suitable in poole and what are the reasons? I for one would prefer the council sells the marah end site for £250k and find another site from the list. Surely its a simple economic decision....take the cash and negotiate for more if you can. May be able to sell the park and ride site too bringing much needed jobs to poole. And im not paid some massive salary to work all that out!!

Would the Atkinson woman please tell us when consultation with the residents of Poole took place and discussed Marshes End and Broadstone Way as preferred sites?
.......
Don;t know about Broadstone Way. but Marshes End was ruled as unsuitable when previous list have been drawn up. Now, according to Eades and Atkinson it's ideal. Just as Marshes End was unsuitable for even parking cars on, but now is ideal for people to live on.
........
Is it any wonder I have absolutely no time for politicians of any party at both local and central government level? As far as I'm concerned the only person who has acted with any integrity over this whole thing is Judy Butt, and I say that judging her as a person with standards rather than as a councillor.

Consultation would have solved nothing because Poole council's idea of consultation is to tell residents what they're GOING to do - it isn't a two-way thing with them. They might put on a fancy exhibition, but when you ask a question, make a comment or make a suggestion, you're fobbed off.
......
For instance, motor cyclists don't drive between between the kerb and a speed cushion and motorists don't drive down the middle of the road between speed cushions where they're designed for bus wheels to pass each side of the cushion do they? They don't according to Poole council even with photographic evidence of it happening.

Thank you for this Caroline43. If you read my comment carefully you will note I had stated ‘realy consulted residents’, I am aware that their ‘listening skills’ leave something to be desired. By definition the act of consulting is ‘to take reguard of someones feelings’. My point is had the BoP done this in the first place some comprmise may have been reached.

Under normal circumstances when two sides become entrenched (as they are at the moment) the next logical step is enter into some form of negotiation, the end result of which may demand some compremise on the part of one or both.parties. As things stand that is an unlikely outcome. What do you suggest should be the way forward?
