Mystery surrounds closure of popular Poole restaurant Georgie Porgie’s at Tower Park

Bournemouth Echo: Mystery surrounds closure of popular Poole restaurant Georgie Porgie’s at Tower Park Mystery surrounds closure of popular Poole restaurant Georgie Porgie’s at Tower Park

A POPULAR buffet restaurant in Poole is shrouded in mystery after claiming to close for refurbishment works over three months ago.

Georgie Porgie’s Buffet World, based in Tower Park, on Yarrow Road, was due to re-open on February 1, after informing customers via their website that they would be closing to refurbish the venue.

Yet almost a month later, the phone lines do not accept incoming calls and when Daily Echo visited Georgie’s Porgies in person, the blinds were down, doors locked and kitchen shelving units could be seen dumped at the back.

Anne Jolliffe, manager of Tower Park, said that the restaurant, which offers different food inspired from around the world, had been shut since November 2013.

She added that a statement had been placed on Tower Park’s website, which reads as follows: “Unfortunately Georgie Porgies is currently closed, despite the message on the Georgie Porgies website. As soon as we have any information about the re-opening we shall announce it here.” Their Facebook page, which features over 1,400 ‘likes’, also shows a number of people who claim to have visited the restaurant, only to find it closed, with no signs on the doors to explain why.

A spokesperson for Borough of Poole confirmed that Georgie Porgie’s Buffet World had a three-star Food Hygiene Rating from the FSA when it closed its doors.

She added that the council had not taken action to close the business, and were advised by a third party that the business may have experienced financial difficulties before its closure.

I can think of Days in Bournemouth town centre which is similar but always seems to do a good trade. I'm sure there are loads of other buffet places around. I don't think it was the format at fault here.

Having eaten here whilst at Tower Park a couple of times, I just don't think the food was very good at all. Quality of food can be compromised when you're trying to serve everything and anything I guess, but compared to other buffet restaurants it was pretty poor IMHO.

I think the phrase Georgie Porgie is just too synonymous with gluttony and being a bit of a porker. I think that the Georgie in the nursery rhyme was King Ceorge IV, who was distinguished by his sizeable girth? Seems like it may have been a restaurant concept out of step with changing food attitudes.

I've eaten there a few times and not once have I had food poisoning, granted comparred to Days in Bournemouth the food wasn't all that but i've never had to many complaints, and in regards to the person that said the location was poor, not only is it 2 minutes from the cinema but the walk from the cinema is 99% under cover so unless you choose to walk in the rain then thats not really a valid point. I think the cost of a meal and as I said the quality of the food has probably contibuted to its downfall

I have been a couple of times and wasn't that impressed- food was ok but not that great considering how much a meal was. Like others have said, probably due to a high amount of competition of places to eat that were much better quality in Tower Park compared to this place.

Saying that, I know someone that got severe food poisoning from eating there one evening so made sure I never went back again. So food preparation and hygiene couldn't of been to the best standard which could also of contributed to it being shut down?

The problem with these buffet 'all you can eat' places is the greed and gluttony experienced in them. I can't go to these places it makes me feel ill to see the mountains of food consumed. It also becomes a bit of a food fight.
So for the normal eaters it's an appetite killer and you leave feeling you just paid for people to get obese.

So the only people who end up eating there are the super sized and much as they enjoy it, this can't be profitable feeding them.

We were looking for an all you can eat. So we came across the countdown. Very excitedly we drove to towerpark at the amazement of finding a grand opening on just a craving of food. So we set off early.....half an hour early. We stood in the cold counting down the seconds to awesome overindulgence in foodstuffs. The opening time passes, people come and go but we stood, firm in belief that amazing food awaits. We could even smell food. People came and went asking if this tradegy of a failed grand opening was so. It felt like an eternity that we waited for it to open. So many disappointed people did we see. The temperature dropped so 14 minutes later we left and had an overpriced burger opposite of queen. We still haven't gotten over the heart wrenching tradegy all that time ago. NH & AP (True story)

Let's be honest - the food was nothing special. However, if you are there with a group (bunch of kids after a visit to the cinema for instance) then the sheer variety was a bit of a boon considering the many and varied tastes of any selection of children & adults. As an occasional and convenient guilty treat, it fulfilled it's brief quite well.

Unfortunately, £15 a head was a bit much for what ultimately turned out to be a fairly substandard selection of food. Consider that at most pubs these days you can eat far better for far less - I'd even go as far as to say that you can eat better at many fast food restaurants for about a third of that cost.

All you can eat is a bit of a gimmick anyway. A Toby carvery or any Wetherspoons menu will fill you up for far less than Georgie Porgies was charging, and it's nicer too.

I've been to Days, and found it perfectly acceptable - the food was fine (not excellent but you wouldn't expect that), the setup is accessible and quick, and the surroundings pleasant enough. No I wouldn't take the missus there for an evening out, but as somewhere to grab some food before or after other entertainments I found it much better than expected. Apart from the toilets, they were admittedly a bit grim.

I can remember once sitting in Pizza Hut looking at the 'all you can haul' buffet across the walkway. The largest people I have ever seen were tripping over each other to gorge themselves on the unlimited food. It was an incredible sight and we watched in fascination as they heaved vast amounts of food into their already bloated bodies. It was a thoroughly depressing sight, particularly the rotund young lady licking the serving spoons before she put them back in the dishes. Enjoy!

Enjoy! Letcommonsenseprevail

Great news that this place selling poor quality food has closed, I hope days is next.
Really? Have you even been to Days, or do you just go around wishing for businesses to fold out of sheer malice?

I've been to Days, and found it perfectly acceptable - the food was fine (not excellent but you wouldn't expect that), the setup is accessible and quick, and the surroundings pleasant enough. No I wouldn't take the missus there for an evening out, but as somewhere to grab some food before or after other entertainments I found it much better than expected. Apart from the toilets, they were admittedly a bit grim.
Unfortunately I have and clearly my standards are far higher than yours.
Everything tasted like a microwave meal and the place was full of glammed up fatties pushing it down their porky throats.
Personally I prefer quality not quantity.
But hey you go for it.

I always found the food at Georgie Porgies tasted like mass produced rubbish that had sat under heating lamps for too long and, surprise surprise, I feel the same way about Days. A buffet that specialises in one type of food (e.g. chinese) and is smaller is usually ok but this big scale all you can eat foods from around the world buffets are always a complete con. Plus if you watch how long the dishes sit out for it's gross, when it's on that scale you can't refresh them as often so things sit out under hot lamps exposed to the air for hours.

As far as I'm concerned it's good riddance, hopefully it'll be replaced with somewhere I might actually want to eat!

Isn't that something of an oxymoron??
